FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hazardous waste is waste such as asbestos, solvents, batteries and chemicals, which contains properties that make it dangerous or harmful to human health or the environment. It is usually characterised as toxic, reactive, corrosive or posing other risks.

Some hazardous waste can be recycled, but this depends on the type of waste. Examples of waste which can be recycled include fluorescent tubes, lightbulbs and batteries. The recycling process for hazardous waste is more complex than conventional recyclables and is subject to additional hazardous waste disposal regulations to ensure safety.

Pigeon guano is the term for pigeon droppings (faeces). It can cause serious health risks by carrying diseases and causing infections, as well as creating significant damage to properties. This can be a common problem on construction sites.

Guano can pass on pathogens such as Listeria and E-coli. When it is dry, the droppings can become airborne, creating the risk of breathing in dust which can lead to diseases such as Psittacosis and Salmonella. It is also highly acidic and can corrode underlying services which may lead to expensive repairs.

Anthrax is a rare but serious illness caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It mainly affects livestock and wild game, and humans can become infected through direct or indirect contact with sick animals.

While the risk is generally low, construction workers may more at risk due to exposure in some situations, such as the following:

  • Building on some types of old land – for example, an old burial site with anthrax-infected carcasses or an old tannery where there may be a risk of soil contamination
  • Demolition of buildings where infected animal hair was used to bind the plaster

On sites which may potentially contain Anthrax, it is recommended that soil and/or building materials are sampled and laboratory tested to provide an indication of the risk which could be present.

Originally added to paint to accelerate drying and increase durability, lead is a highly harmful substance to human health and the environment. The paint was banned from use in 1978 once the dangers of lead poisoning were fully recognised.

Lead testing will identify and assess the presence of lead-based paint in commercial and residential properties. Testing consists of taking small samples of the paint which are sent to a specialist laboratory for analysis.
