For this recent project we were tasked with the demolition of Number 1 Hangar at RAF Marham. The hangar was built in the late 1930’s to house heavy bombers during the Second World War – and most recently housed the RAFs tornado jets. The demolition project is part of the continuing works to modernise the Norfolk RAF base and make way for new accommodation for the F-35 Lightening Stealth Bomber.

Working between two live hangars and a taxiway for the jets, it was important that nothing escaped the site boundary. To combat this we installed a 200m scaffold debris screen to the affected areas which was designed and erected by our in house scaffolding team. We also implemented the use of two dust cannons to prevent any dust or debris migrating from the high reach works.

The next challenge was the logistics of removing waste from site. The companies we normally use were more than ready to help us out with this project. The likes of Firmstone removed over 15,000 tons of material and Collins Skip Hire removed just under 150 tons of asbestos from site – both did a brilliant job as always.

With all this sorted, we handpicked our most experienced Demolition team, along with our most senior plant operators to do the job on time, within budget, but most of all, safely.

“On this project, one of the biggest obstacles was the debris. We are proud to say that we successfully recycled 100% of the concrete, bricks, scrap metal and wood removed. We also managed to recycle 94% of the general waste produced from this project, thanks to the hard work from the Anglian Team.”

We were given an 18 week programme to complete the works, but we completed ahead of schedule, within 16 weeks of starting. Our client, Balfour Beatty, was very impressed with the way we approached the project, from tender stage through to our work on site. This then led onto Anglian Demolition & Asbestos being awards another package on RAF Marham, with all the credit going to the guys on site and the commercial team behind the scenes in the office.
