Goldsmith Street, Norwich is a Norwich City Council Development scheme with an aim to provide affordable social housing. The original site was part of the World War 2 re-build, after reportedly falling victim to 5 bomb attacks. During the 1960s, the housing was transformed into a retirement village, however became redundant once the housing didn’t meet modern day standards.

Our earthworks division was awarded the contract to prepare the brownfield site ready for construction on the new social housing. Due to the uncertain and turbulent history of the site, a few obstacles arose during the earthworks process; for example, old oil storage tanks were identified during the remediation phase and subsequently were removed.

“It was a pleasure to carry out remediation work on a project that not only is really valuable to the local Norwich community, but also to be involved in a small slice of history.”

Our team completed our part of the project within a 6 week time frame, which aligned with the start date for the next stage of the build.

  • The site covered approximately 12 acres
  • A total of 4,670.6 tons were processed and left on site for re-use
  • 1279 man hours
